Barry Nunn Memorial Oration

By Ashan Peiris

On October 15, 2023, Pastor Thomas Pietsch gave the Barry Nunn Memorial oration at Corpus Christi College seminary, honouring Rev. Dr. Peter Cross. His talk, "Lutheran Roman Catholic Dialogue: Present and Future Contours," weaved a compelling story about the intersection of Lutheran and Catholic beliefs.

Pastor Pietsch's eloquence as he explained Lutheran principles and how they fit with Catholic beliefs echoed through the seminary. As an example, he explained that while there is substantial overlap in the Lutheran and Catholic understandings of baptism, Lutherans emphasise the baptised being clothed in God’s righteousness and mercy while Catholics emphasise the power of baptism to cleanse us from original sin. His discourse examined future possibilities for the Lutheran Roman Catholic Dialogue including how anthropological issues present a new and challenging area for discussion.

The occasion peaked as Pastor Pietsch gracefully answered a barrage of questions, enthralling the audience. It was a rare and valuable chance for all guests to better grasp how ancient teachings and modern beliefs blend. Pastor Pietsch's sermon inspired attendees to increase their spiritual awareness, embrace their faith heritage, and engage in cross-denominational discourse. This evening reflected knowledge, unity, and ecumenical understanding's limitless potential.
